Science and research make a significant contribution to the design of the new working environments. Scientists at universities and institutes throughout Germany are looking for answers to the most pressing questions about the working environments of the future: How will technologies change work? How does work change technologies? Which requirements does work set for people in the future? How will science change work? In the Year of Science, researchers and citizens will join forces to look beyond their own backyard into the diverse and exciting working environments of the future.

The globalized European environment is faced by the challenge to meet the continuously growing worldwide demand for capital and consumer goods by simultaneously ensuring a sustainable evolvement of human existence. A worldwide increase in wealth based on current technologies with their consumption of resources will exceed every accountable social, environmental and economic bound. The manufacturing industry accounts for approximately 16% of global GDP and 14% of the total employment. A strong manufacturing industry can thus be the cornerstone of a Sustainable Development in Europe. Young entrepreneurial engineers motivated to set up sustainable initiatives have to be identified and trained in European universities. They will hence gain the knowledge and skills to expand sustainable engineering to competitive innovations for empowering a global sustainable development.

In this large-scale interdisciplinary project funded by the German Research Foundation, around 50 scientists are developing sustainable production technologies and strategies. The goal: Greater prosperity for more people with less resource consumption. Production technology in the broadest sense determines the relationship between benefits and the use of resources needed. This requires new manufacturing processes and products, greater intensity of use of resources and artefacts as well as life cycle management.

Pharma LEAN Factory

Together with a leading German pharmaceutical company, TU Berlin, Fraunhofer IPK and ITCL GmbH have developed and implemented a concept for a learning factory in the context of pharmaceutical production. Since 2014, training courses have been held for employees and managers on lean management topics. In addition, the Learning Factory is being continuously developed.
Montageanleitungen für MAN Diesel & Turbo

In contrast to series production, assembly instructions in special machine manufacturing are only used for the single assembly of a product. The installer needs information on how to identify component or assembly faults and how to react in case of a problem. In the "Assembly instructions for MAN Diesel & Turbo" project, assembly instructions are being prepared for all compressors manufactured at MAN Diesel & Turbo's Berlin site, adapted to the needs of the installers.
